The first ever showing of our documentary entitled Silence Is Sound was in Reno this week and it was a success. The cast and crew got together to promote and host the showing and after party at TMCC and Seven Tea House in Reno NV. Local Hip Hop legends, writers, critics, teachers and students came out to watch and support the film and it was well received.

After the viewing, we all went out to Seven Tea House to let out a years worth of stress and just decompress, bond and catch up on old times. It was a blast.

Big shout to director Matt Reyes. You made an incredible, and inspirational film for anyone who makes beats or aspires to produce. This was the first time I was finally able to see the film and it was worth the wait. I know we’ve got a lot of work to do still. Let’s go get it! Thank you!

Shout out to Joey Golaw and his rapid, no holds barred, picture taking skills. Most of these pics came from his camera.

Although we are celebrating for the moment, this is just the beginning of a long journey ahead to get this film seen to as many people as possible. In the coming months we are planning to enter in some film festivals and hopefully we can get to the point where we can show everyone this film online. For now, it is still very much under wraps until we feel its time to throw it out to the internet.

It’s almost time, I’m amped about the first showing of Silence Is Sound. Check out the stickers just printed up.

The films director (Matt Reyes), along with the film itself, is already generating a buzz in Reno.  Recently, he appeared on front page of The Echo talking about filmmaking and the Silence Is Sound project.  Not only did Matt Reyes spend most of his childhood growing up in Reno, but a majority of the artists featured in this film hail from Nevada so it only made sense to kick off the entire project from the biggest little city on Earth.

For the first time, it will be shown at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno NV on Oct. 22nd 2009.  After the showing, there will be an after party at Seven Teahouse, a small meet and greet with the cast and crew.

Now we know not everyone is going to be able to make it out there but if you’re in the area, we strongly suggest you come through and watch the film with us.  Addresses and times are at the bottom of this post.  For those who won’t be able to make it, we hope the film will be in distribution soon but there are many plans in development for this documentary and we know RusticRen is taking their time to do it right.

It’s most likely that this film will see as many festivals as possible before we see any online distribution or DVD sales, we suggest following the director on Twitter for up to date information, @ReyRonin cause anything could change.

Lord it’s tough when you’re livin’ with a dream.

If you’re keeping tabs on dates…Sept 1 was the deadline to have the rough cut of the film complete. With that said, I’m taking a week off from editing because the rough cut is done. It’s been a long arduous process up to this point with the home stretch still in sight. A huge thank you goes out to the entire Rusticren Media squad for getting us to this point. But there is still lots of work to do! We need to push on getting the funds raised so that we can get Silence Is Sound into some film festivals. Still a shit load of ground work to pursue. And even more deadlines to meet. By Sept 18, a final cut will be complete, then of course the film needs to be ran through the color correction process. A process which I am not super excited about. It’s one of those necessary evils, like paperwork! And thanks to Mr. Reshard Wilson, I am reminded how much I hate paperwork…glad to have you aboard!

Creating the closing credits is a funny thing…First of all, when you have a limited budget or no budget to begin with, everyone involved wears multiple hats. So in the credits you keep seeing the same names. That’s how it is I guess as an independent production team. The advantage to this is not having to worry about too many people, the production process is smartly manageable.

Thursday, October 22nd we will be screening the film as a part of the Golden Lens Film Series up at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, NV. This is an annual film showcase put on by the college that brings out film enthusiasts in and around the Reno art scene. Props to Lindsay Wilson for coordinating that. We are currently in talks with other local venues in Reno for a private screening the following night, Friday October 23rd. This will be a dedicated screening for the cast and crew, family and friends, and invited guests. We are also trying to get a 3rd screening open to the public on Saturday October 24th.. Stay tuned for further details.

Meanwhile, the online promotions continues. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Youtube, Vimeo, Blogspot, and various other social networking outlets provide a perfect forum for us to get the film exposed, for FREE! With the focus on generating online traffic, we hope to get a tribe of loyal fans who will essentially be the flagship for this guerrilla style movement to get the film seen.

We are also working on a double soundtrack… I am not completely sure if this has been done before for an independent documentary film but we’re gonna go ahead and do it. Demond Dowdy and Joey Golaw have coordinated a plan to create an album with artists featured in the film. While DJ Seven (Ben Sensabaugh) will produce a mixtape of all the music used in the film.

So I’m off the N.C. for a bit… Get out of this damn editing suite and breathe some fresh oxygen. I do need to acknowledge the gratitude I feel to have come this far with the film. Even though production isn’t complete and only the rough cut exists, I have faced many heart wrenching challenges and obstacles just to produce that much. We started this film back in December of 08 with just the concept…here we are now 10 months into it getting closer to manifesting that concept. I’m truly grateful. – M. Reyes

Here again happy to say that post production is still on schedule for a Sept 1st deadline for the rough cut of the film. I just edited and re-edited the ending about 4 times this week and finally found one I was satisfied with..There’s no doubt that I’ll go back to it and make a few subtle changes. Got the graphics ready to be inserted. I still need to shoot some video for another segment of the film but that’s easy and I know exactly what I want and where it needs to go…

The Rusticren team is firing up the engines for a long fund raising process ready to be tackled. The road to the film festival circuit is not easy. They all want your money of course. Some require other things like press kits and whatever. Then, if you get accepted you need to arrange your own travel and lodging… Definitely going to be on the look out for film festivals in cities where we know people and can stay with them.

I realize that the economy is slow and money is tight. Sponsoring an independent film might be the last thing on anyone’s mind. But think about the hours and hard work that independent artists put into their art to keep enthusiasts of independent culture entertained through economic hardships and stormy weather. We provide escapism, we tell stories, we offer up something to smile about in tough times. We maintain and upkeep a part of our culture that needs to be there to balance out the fast food battery operated robotic society we live in today. A society so blinded by the pressure of keeping up with the Smiths and the Vanillas that we lose focus on what’s important. Cultivating the mind and remaining human, realizing our potential in all things, and most importantly living out our dreams.

It all sounds very romantic and sales pitch like but the reality is, keeping people entertained is big business and making a statement in any big business game is a challenge, especially the independent thinkers and artists. Bob Marley once said “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe”. It remains this way for the independent artist because people continue to support big business and are satisfied with digesting what is fed to them. A lot of people talk about wanting something different (change, perspective, ideas, etc..) and when presented with something different they turn away.

Is it because people are mechanical in thinking if is doesn’t come from a big business corporation or doesn’t have a recognizable logo on it that its no good? Admittedly so there is a lot of garbage out there because of the accessibility to technology, but that’s another point in case. And I can’t front like I’m a saint…but the difference for me is that I’m taking a proactive stance towards keeping honest and humble art alive. This is why we do this music, this is why we make these films, this is why we struggle to get it out there…
