The editing for Silence Is Sound is approximately half way complete. Currently sitting at the 30 minute mark. This is kind of a big deal for me personally because of all the speed bumps and hurdles that I had to get through just to get to this point.
The 30 minute mark offers a break for the audience in the storyline as the film begins to shift into a more serious side of being an indy artist by exploring the undocumented side of the independent game. Touching apon topics like money, social networking, technology, relevancy, making ends meet, and crossroads.
In my opinion, if you log onto any social networking sites that allow people to upload their music you’ll see a trend of lofty amateur musical talent that mirrors what it sees on TV. And we all know what is on TV is not necesarily reality, even reality TV shows.
Of all the social networking, myspace seems to be the number spot for amateur and preffesional talent for uploading music. In a recent blog on nielson.com (Nielson Ratings) http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/social-media-stats-myspace-music-growing-twitters-big-move/, the music.myspace.com domain unique traffic has increased over 1,000 percent since its launch in Sept. 08.
What I take from this stat is that there are that many more artists or potential artists uploading music and/or listening or searching for new music, whatever genre.
The two main reasons why I am talking about this is for one, a mass amount of competition out there for indy artists. With the playing field leveled, any and everyone can upload what they are doing, good or bad. In Silence Is Sound, this controversial topic is debated over by the main characters, all of which are in this battlefield of uploading music to social networking sites.
The second reason why this is important to understand is, there is no middle man. No record label in this equation. Its artist to consumer, straight from bedroom, basement, studio to listener’s ipod or whatever. Another topic debated over in Silence Is Sound.
To wrap this all up into a coherent blog, like I said earlier this is the undocumented side of the independent artist world, the real world so to speak. This is the side that no one really talks about on your youtubes and myspaces and face twitters itunes and whatever. All consumers see is the 5 or 6 uploaded songs with some flashy graphics and maybe a false reality that the artist themselves have created. All for the bottom line, buy my music!
Silence Is Sound explores these issues and intricacies behind musical social networking. And that’s where I’m at with the film on the editing side of things.
But first a few days off from editing until the new graphics card gets here. Refocus and jotting down ideas and which way to roll with presenting these issues. Gonna smoke a fat cigar in the Vegas heat and just think. I’m going to rest my body and soul and recover from my scrapes and bruises from softball and soccer. Make a trip out to see my lady…Basically a week and a half long oil change on this creative vehicle.
As August rolls around, its back to the relentless effort of getting this film done, well rough cut by Sept. – M. Reyes
